a couple years ago i fixed a dress for my friend karen. it was a really simple fix, literally requiring only a 4 inch square of fabric. a couple months ago she told her sister-in-law kirsten that i am really good at tailoring dresses. so kirsten calls me up and says that she needs me to fix a dress for her. no problem. then she shows up with a completely strapless dress that is also about 3 inches too long for her, one yard of lining material and a sheer shawl one yard long and about 18 inches wide. @#$%@^$??? i pretend it would be no problem and then spend the next few days *kind of* freaking out and wondering what i got myself into. this seriously kept me up at night. for several nights.
but eventually the stars aligned, the hem came out straight (the piece was over 20 feet long when i finally cut it off), and the dress turned out beautiful. i was really proud of it.
these pictures are from the final fitting... there are still basting stitches in the pleats and pins in the back, but they're the only pictures i have. *sigh* good job, melissa...
I agree, impressive! That looks like difficult material to sew with too.

ReplyDeleteI know how hard it is to deal with lining material and people who don't sew and think you can make magical things happen- like capes with hidden sleeves or not. Anyway, fortunately for us both we had the luck to get the jobs done.

ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry! I didn't mean to stress you out!!! but, my confidence was not misplaced. Love the pictures you posted and everyone loved the dress at the wedding...kirst couldn't say enough about how pleased she was and I don't think anyone else could have done it. Good job...start a business? :). Oh, and i couldn't stop laughing at Henry's video in the last post. He's gotten so big! Thanks for starting a blog.
ReplyDeletehahah, karen it wasn't all that bad.. i'm just usually a pattern follower, so i really had to just sit around and think of how to make a pattern out of thin air :) it was a good challenge. i was totally proud to see you wore the dress i fixed to the wedding, too :) we miss you guys around here!!
